118 | Should you put prices on your website?

I got a great question from Cora about whether I recommend that practitioners put their prices on their websites. Short answer: yes, I think it makes sense to publish your prices. In this episode I walk through why I feel strongly about this, what can happen when you don't share prices upfront, and how transparency frees up time and makes discovery calls more meaningful.

00:00:00.487 --> 00:00:03.797
Hi there! Welcome to In the Clinic with Camille. My name is Camille Freeman,

00:00:03.797 --> 00:00:07.407
and in this podcast I share tips, tidbits, and resources that might be helpful

00:00:07.407 --> 00:00:10.187
for herbalists and nutritionists who are in private practice.

00:00:10.849 --> 00:00:15.267
I got a question from Cora about whether I have published anything in my newsletter

00:00:15.267 --> 00:00:19.202
or in the podcast about whether to post your prices on your website.

00:00:19.746 --> 00:00:24.112
And I've addressed this in different workshops and in my Monday Mentoring community,

00:00:24.356 --> 00:00:27.717
but I don't think I've done a specific podcast episode on this.

00:00:27.717 --> 00:00:29.168
And if I have, it hasn't been for a while.

00:00:29.383 --> 00:00:32.099
So great question, Cora. Let me address it right here.

00:00:32.343 --> 00:00:36.581
The short version is, yes, I think it makes sense to publish your prices on your website.

00:00:37.028 --> 00:00:41.149
So ta-da, the end. That is a 38-second podcast episode.

00:00:41.457 --> 00:00:44.287
But I will elaborate a little bit just to give you my thinking,

00:00:44.287 --> 00:00:48.737
because I know there are people who disagree with this, who feel that you shouldn't

00:00:48.737 --> 00:00:53.488
publish your prices and that you should try to have a call with people so that you can,

00:00:54.156 --> 00:00:57.175
meet them in person and share prices in that context.

00:00:57.506 --> 00:01:01.747
All right, so here's why I believe pretty strongly in publishing your prices.

00:01:02.438 --> 00:01:08.097
Number one, because if the price is there, then people can self-screen if it

00:01:08.097 --> 00:01:09.387
is not what they're looking for.

00:01:10.049 --> 00:01:13.212
And we always get in the mindset of, oh, it might be too much for people.

00:01:13.450 --> 00:01:16.242
Some people might be actually looking for somebody more expensive.

00:01:16.614 --> 00:01:20.585
There are people who want a more comprehensive thing, who want somebody who's at the top of their.

00:01:21.653 --> 00:01:24.150
You know, price range, they want a sort of a high end experience.

00:01:24.150 --> 00:01:26.440
And they might look at your price and be like, Oh, no, that's not really what

00:01:26.440 --> 00:01:30.155
I want. I want like a full service, you know, all in kind of thing.

00:01:30.614 --> 00:01:34.822
So either way, up or down, your price can help screen people in or out.

00:01:35.469 --> 00:01:38.860
All right. So if we think about like, Oh, I'm not going to tell them the price

00:01:38.860 --> 00:01:39.875
because I want to meet them.

00:01:40.089 --> 00:01:44.330
The implication there is that you are then going to try to convince them to

00:01:44.330 --> 00:01:49.273
use your service, even if they're a little bit outside of their comfort range,

00:01:49.569 --> 00:01:51.560
when it comes to the pricing in either direction.

00:01:51.920 --> 00:01:54.335
I don't really love that as a way to start out a relationship.

00:01:54.927 --> 00:01:57.990
As a potential client, there's always that thing hanging over your head.

00:01:57.990 --> 00:02:02.760
If you don't know the price, you're thinking, ooh, am I going to really love

00:02:02.760 --> 00:02:06.090
this person and then find out it's eight bazillion dollars to work with them?

00:02:06.090 --> 00:02:08.613
And then it's an awkward situation. I'm going to have to say no.

00:02:08.741 --> 00:02:10.401
They're going to pressure me.

00:02:10.697 --> 00:02:13.710
I'm not good under pressure. I might commit to something that I don't actually

00:02:13.710 --> 00:02:15.399
want to do or that's not in my budget.

00:02:16.043 --> 00:02:18.710
It just starts the whole thing off awkwardly and that's hanging over at their

00:02:18.710 --> 00:02:20.612
head. So I don't love that.

00:02:21.384 --> 00:02:24.640
I don't love that. And I also think it's just not a good use of time.

00:02:24.640 --> 00:02:28.970
If your consult is $5,000 and the person was looking for something closer to

00:02:28.970 --> 00:02:33.370
the range of $75, it just doesn't make sense for both of you to take time out

00:02:33.370 --> 00:02:34.811
of your schedule to have a meeting,

00:02:35.345 --> 00:02:39.520
only for them to find out, oh, this is 800 times more than I was thinking about

00:02:39.520 --> 00:02:41.928
paying. And it really, truly isn't even possible.

00:02:42.427 --> 00:02:45.068
So I just think, why don't you put the price on the website?

00:02:45.405 --> 00:02:49.480
If for some reason you don't have a specific price, like maybe you custom design

00:02:49.480 --> 00:02:52.010
packages based on people's need, at least give them a range.

00:02:52.010 --> 00:02:55.348
Like my packages run from $500 to $2,000 or whatever it is.

00:02:55.946 --> 00:02:59.920
That way people can look at it and see, is this approximately something that

00:02:59.920 --> 00:03:01.217
I would be comfortable paying?

00:03:01.617 --> 00:03:04.131
Even if it's a little bit of a stretch, let them make that decision.

00:03:04.578 --> 00:03:09.181
And then the only thing left for them to decide is, is this person a good fit?

00:03:09.950 --> 00:03:14.300
If you want to have a call then that you can determine, do I work the way that

00:03:14.300 --> 00:03:17.714
this person, you know, the type of support this person wants?

00:03:17.935 --> 00:03:20.940
Are we a good fit? Might I need to refer them to somebody else?

00:03:20.940 --> 00:03:23.810
Do I have an opening in the range that they were looking to get started?

00:03:23.810 --> 00:03:24.808
All those kinds of things.

00:03:25.092 --> 00:03:28.590
You can certainly work all that out in a discovery call, but if they already

00:03:28.590 --> 00:03:32.471
know the price, then that's kind of out of the way, and you're just working on...

00:03:33.211 --> 00:03:36.059
Determining whether you can help them, whether you're the best person to help

00:03:36.059 --> 00:03:38.371
them, and so forth, and going from there.

00:03:38.673 --> 00:03:44.002
So I think it just removes a lot of pressure. It starts the relationship off on a,

00:03:44.617 --> 00:03:48.519
foot that feels like you're giving them information, you are trusting them to

00:03:48.519 --> 00:03:53.446
make a decision to know if it's worth pursuing just from a financial standpoint,

00:03:53.776 --> 00:03:56.151
and then you can chime in after that.

00:03:56.714 --> 00:03:59.520
So that's my, those are my thoughts on that.

00:03:59.915 --> 00:04:03.287
You also sometimes, if you have multiple services and packages,

00:04:03.916 --> 00:04:07.209
there have been times where I can't remember what I charge. I have to actually

00:04:07.209 --> 00:04:10.795
look it up myself on the website. So again, it's nice of the people have seen it before.

00:04:11.207 --> 00:04:14.399
You're not always on the hook to just immediately pull off the top of your head

00:04:14.399 --> 00:04:18.459
how much all the different variations of what you do cost. So that's a tertiary

00:04:18.459 --> 00:04:19.856
benefit, but just one to think about.

00:04:20.396 --> 00:04:24.843
All right. So in summary, in my opinion, put it up there on your website.

00:04:25.577 --> 00:04:28.919
As I've talked about in a different podcast, you can change your prices anytime.

00:04:28.919 --> 00:04:33.769
So feel free to take your best guess, see how it feels. And if you want to change

00:04:33.769 --> 00:04:37.091
it next week, you can. If you want to adjust it, whatever, that's fine.

00:04:37.341 --> 00:04:41.828
But I do recommend putting your current prices on your website so that you can

00:04:42.119 --> 00:04:45.829
start your relationship off with transparency and trust that the client can

00:04:45.829 --> 00:04:48.282
make a good decision about that for themselves.

00:04:49.456 --> 00:04:52.862
Okay that's helpful thank you so much Cora for sending in this question,

00:04:53.597 --> 00:04:58.909
